04 Tapussa and Bhallika

high-definition creative commons posters depicting Tapussa and Bhallika together with further information.

While the Buddha is experiencing the happiness of liberation, two traveling merchants, Tapussa and Bhallika, are directed to him by a deity. They offer the Buddha milk-rice and honey-balls. After the Four Great Kings provide stone bowls for the Buddha to accept the food, the merchants declare their faith. By taking refuge in the Buddha and the Dhamma, they become the world’s very first two-refuge lay disciples.
