The wanderer Sāriputta hears a concise verse about causation from the monk Assaji and instantly attains the Dhamma. He shares it with his close friend Moggallāna, who achieves the same realization. Together with their two hundred and fifty followers, they ordain under the Buddha. As many other prominent young men of good families join the order, the public grows anxious, fearing the Buddha is making families childless and destroying lineages.
