Born into a wealthy Jewish family in Berlin in 1923, Ilse Kussel enjoyed an affluent childhood. The rise of Nazi Germany shattered this security through intense persecution. Following Kristallnacht, her parents fled to Shanghai while young Ilse escaped to England on a rescue transport in 1939. She was permanently separated from her parents and relatives, many of whom perished during the Holocaust, leaving her to rebuild her life in exile.
