02 Flight into Exile
high-definition creative commons posters depicting Flight into Exile from The Life of Ayyā Khemā together with further information.
Flight into Exile recounts a young Jewish girl’s harrowing escape from Nazi Germany to England. Sent to Glasgow, she experiences profound loneliness, language barriers, and social discrimination while living with a host family. After learning English, at age seventeen, Ilse obtains travel documents to rejoin her parents in Shanghai. Her perilous ocean voyage aboard a dilapidated freighter brings severe sickness, stifling heat, wartime dangers, and an enduring personal lesson.
