12 The Nuns’ Island

high-definition creative commons posters depicting The Nuns’ Island from The Life of Ayyā Khemā together with further information.

Ayyā Khemā recounts the creation and management of a Buddhist nuns’ convent on an island in Sri Lanka, constructed with help from engineer Arthur de Silva. The author details daily monastic routines, international Dharma teaching trips, establishing global Buddhist women’s organizations, and receiving full ordination. Escalating political unrest, terrorist violence, and the tragic deaths of key supporters eventually forced the author to cease island operations and leave in 1989.
