Complexes arise from ignorance (avijjā), defined as a non-understanding of the present moment. This ignorance fuels conditioning complexes (saṅkhāra), producing a relinking consciousness (paṭisandhi-viññāṇa) that creates the illusion of a persisting self or soul. Theravāda Buddhism emphasizes anatta (no-soul), viewing rebirth not as an entity’s continuation but as a conditioned process of dependent origination across the past, present, and future.
