12 Concentration

high-definition creative commons posters depicting Concentration from Basic Buddhist Concepts, together with further information.

Meditation consists of concentration (samādhi) and insight (vipassanā). Concentration employs various subjects to achieve one-pointedness (ekaggatā) and mental absorption (jhāna), leading to temporary tranquility (samatha). While samādhi suppresses the five mental hindrances (nīvaraṇa), it is often an escape from conflict rather than a permanent solution. Ultimately, one must move beyond concentration to insight (vipassanā) to gain the understanding required for true deliverance and lasting peace.
