A member of the noble Khön family, Könchok Gyalpo (1034–1102) founded the Sakya Monastery in 1073. Witnessing the corruption of the Old Nyingma practices in his region, he sought out the New translations from Drokmi Śākya Yeshe. By establishing a permanent seat for his family’s spiritual lineage, he transitioned the Khön clan from ancient rituals to the systematic New Translation (Sarma) schools. This act laid the institutional foundation for the powerful Sakya sect.
