The fourth of the Five Sakya Patriarchs, Śākya Paṇḍita (1182–1251) was a peerless scholar who mastered the five sciences. He is credited with establishing the rigorous standard of logic and debate in Tibet. His diplomatic skills saved Tibet from Mongol invasion when he befriended Godan Khan, leading to the Sakya family’s political regency over Tibet. Regarded as an emanation of the Buddha of Wisdom, Mañjuśrī, his works remain the gold standard for Tibetan scholasticism.
