Butön () was a monumental figure, famous for organizing the Tibetan Buddhist Canon. He compiled and cataloged the Kangyur (The Words of the Buddha) and the Tengyur (The Commentaries), providing the definitive structure for Tibetan scripture. As the abbot of Shalu Monastery, he was a master of the Kālachakra Tantra and a prolific writer. His historical work, History of Buddhism in India and Tibet, is an essential primary source.
