02 Anāthapiṇḍika

high-definition creative commons posters depicting Anāthapiṇḍika based on the Great Chronicles of the Buddhas together with further information.

Anāthapiṇḍika, who aspired under Buddha Padumuttara to be the foremost lay donor, was a wealthy merchant of Sāvatthī. Upon meeting the Buddha in Rājagaha, he became a Stream-enterer and invited him to Sāvatthī. He spent vast sums on transit monasteries and then purchased Prince Jeta's park, covering it with gold coins, to build the famous Jetavana monastery at a total cost of 540 million. His daily generosity to the Saṅgha was unparalleled. On his deathbed, Ven. Sāriputta gave him a profound discourse on non-attachment to the six sense spheres and all phenomena, which moved him to tears. He passed away and was reborn in the Tusita Realm, later visiting the Buddha as a Deva to praise the Jetavana monastery and Ven. Sāriputta.
