03 Citta the Householder

high-definition creative commons posters depicting Citta the Householder based on the Great Chronicles of the Buddhas together with further information.

Citta, who aspired in a past life to be a foremost lay exponent of the Dhamma, was born in Macchikāsaṇḍa amidst a shower of flowers. He became a Non-returner after hearing a discourse from Ven. Mahānāma. As a supporter of the Ambāṭaka monastery, he was known for his wisdom, engaging in profound Dhamma discussions with monastics like Ven. Isidatta and witnessing miracles by Ven. Mahaka. He once led a large pilgrimage of 2,000 disciples to see the Buddha in Sāvatthī, receiving divine hospitality. On his deathbed, he admonished relatives to have perfect confidence in the Three Treasures and to be generous. Being a Non-returner, he was reborn in a Brahma realm of the Pure Abodes.
