100,000 aeons ago during the era of Buddha Padumuttara, a wealthy householder named Videha observed the Buddha declare a monk foremost in ascetic practices (dhutaṅga). Inspired, he made grand offerings to the Buddha and Saṅgha for seven days and aspired to hold the same title under a future Buddha, receiving a prophecy of fulfillment under Buddha Gotama. In his final existence, he was born as Pipphali Kassapa into a wealthy Brahmin family. Renouncing vast wealth, he and his wife Bhaddā Kāpilānī entered the homeless life. Upon meeting Buddha Gotama, Pipphali was ordained and attained Arahatship in just seven days. Highly revered for his strict austerity and solitary practice, the Buddha honored him by exchanging robes with him and declaring him foremost in ascetic practices.
