100,000 aeons ago during the era of Buddha Padumuttara, an unnamed householder observed a monk declared foremost in the psychic power of the Divine Eye (dibba-cakkhu). Inspired, he offered seven days of lavish alms, lit thousands of lamps to cultivate the gift of light, and aspired to hold the same title under a future Buddha, receiving a prophecy of fulfillment under Buddha Gotama. In a later life during Buddha Kassapa’s era, he continued offering thousands of oil lamps around a sacred shrine. In his final existence as Prince Anuruddha, cousin of Prince Siddhattha, he entered the Saṅgha and diligently practiced meditation. He attained Arahatship and was declared by Buddha Gotama as foremost in the Divine Eye.
