100,000 aeons ago during the era of Buddha Padumuttara, Revata was a boatman operating a ferry at Payāga port. When Buddha Padumuttara arrived with 100,000 monks, Revata built a decorated barge with a white canopy to ferry them across. Inspired upon witnessing a monk declared foremost among forest-dwellers, he offered grand alms for seven days and aspired to hold the same title under a future Buddha, receiving a prophecy of fulfillment. In his final existence, Revata was born as the youngest brother of Venerable Sāriputta. Fleeing an arranged marriage after realizing the impermanence of physical beauty, he entered the Saṅgha and chose to live in a harsh acacia forest (khadira). Cultivating deep meditation, he attained Arahatship and was declared by Buddha Gotama as foremost among forest-dwellers (araññaka).
