high-definition creative commons posters depicting Ven. Ānanda from the Great Chronicles together with further information.
100,000 aeons ago under Buddha Padumuttara, a prince named Sumana observed a monk declared foremost among attendants. Inspired, he made a grand seven-day offering and aspired for the same position under a future Buddha, receiving a prophecy of fulfillment under Buddha Gotama. In his final existence, he was born as Prince Ānanda, cousin to Prince Siddhattha. After ordaining, he was chosen as the Buddha's personal attendant, serving him with utter devotion under eight strict conditions. Ānanda memorized every discourse, earning five supreme titles, including foremost in great learning (bahussuta) and memory (sati). Though attaining Arahatship only after the Buddha's Parinibbāna, he recited all the Suttas at the First Buddhist Council.
