100,000 aeons ago under Buddha Padumuttara, a wealthy householder observed a monk declared foremost in good health and longevity. Inspired, he built a vast monastery, provided medicinal requisites to the Saṅgha for seven days, and aspired for the same distinction under a future Buddha, receiving a prophecy of fulfillment. In Buddha Vipassī’s era, he again gained great merit by curing sick monks with herbal medicines. In his final existence, he was born into a rich family and swallowed by a giant fish as an infant, miraculously surviving unharmed due to his vast merit. Ordained by Buddha Gotama at age eighty, he attained Arahatship in seven days. Living to 160 without a single day of illness, he was declared foremost in good health (appābādha).
