100,000 aeons ago under Buddha Padumuttara, a wealthy householder observed a monk declared foremost among those who wear coarse or rough robes. Inspired, he made grand seven-day offerings to the Buddha and Saṅgha and aspired for the same title under a future Buddha, receiving a prophecy of fulfillment. In his final existence, he was born into a Brahmin family as Mogharāja. He initially studied as a student of the ascetic Bāvari. Going to Buddha Gotama alongside fifteen other Brahmin youths, Mogharāja asked his famous question regarding how to view the world to escape Death. Upon hearing the Buddha’s verse on observing the world as void (suñña), he instantly attained Arahatship. The Buddha later declared him foremost in wearing coarse robes (lūkha-cīvara-dhara).
