03 Ven. Uppalavaṇṇā
high-definition creative commons posters depicting Ven. Uppalavaṇṇā based on the Great Chronicles of the Buddhas together with further information.
Aspiring to be foremost in supernormal powers under Buddha Padumuttara, she was reborn through many existences, including as Princess Samaṇaguttā, one of King Kikī’s seven daughters. In one life, as a farmer’s daughter, she offered popcorn and a lotus flower to a Paccekabuddha but wavered, leading to mixed fortunes. She was later born from a lotus as Queen Padumāvatī, whose every step produced a lotus flower. After her 500 sons became Paccekabuddhas and she passed away, she was reborn as a farmhand who offered meals to them. She finally was born in her last life as Uppalavaṇṇā, who, due to her past aspiration and extensive merit, would become the foremost female monastic in supernormal powers under Buddha Gotama.
