02 The Well of Perseverance

high-definition creative commons posters depicting The Well of Perseverance from the Pāḷi Jātaka stories together with further information.

In Benares, under King Brahmadatta of Kāsi, the Bodhisatta led a caravan across a scorching sandy wilderness. When their pilot fell asleep, they lost their way and exhausted their water. While others despaired, the Bodhisatta’s persistent effort led him to find water sixty cubits beneath a rock. By breaking the stone, they were saved, demonstrating that untiring effort eventually brings success and inner peace.
