In the kingdom of Seri, the Bodhisatta and a greedy merchant sold wares in the city of Andhapura. A poor family offered a dirty bowl, unaware it was real gold. The greedy hawker, called Serivā, lied about its value to cheat them, but the honest Bodhisatta recognized its true worth and paid fairly. Consumed by rage and intense sorrow, the greedy merchant perished, marking Devadatta’s first grudge against him.
