In Benares, Kāsi, the Lord High Treasurer Cullakaseṭṭhi noted with a dead mouse he could start a business. A poor young man overheard and sold it for a farthing. Through clever trades involving molasses, water, and firewood, he amassed wealth. After buying a ship’s cargo and earning two hundred thousand pieces, he shared half with Cullakaseṭṭhi. Impressed, the Treasurer married him to his own daughter, making the industrious youth his sole successor.
