In Benares, King Brahmadatta of Kāsi replaced his honest valuer, the Bodhisatta, with a foolish man to preserve royal wealth. This new valuer absurdly priced five hundred horses at just one measure of rice. Advised by the Bodhisatta, the horse-dealer bribed the fool to value that rice before the court. He claimed it was worth all Bārāṇasī, exposing his incompetence and the king’s greed to public laughter and deep ridicule.
