09 The King’s Grey Hair

high-definition creative commons posters depicting The King’s Grey Hair from the Pāḷi Jātaka stories together with further information.

King Makhādeva of Mithilā lived for millennia before spotting a single grey hair. Viewing it as a divine messenger warning of impermanence and death, he immediately abdicated to his son and became an ascetic. Spending millennia cultivating divine virtues in a mango grove, he reached the Brahma Realm. Reborn later as King Nimi, he and his lineage repeated this same path of righteous rule and spiritual renunciation.
