10 The Bliss of Renunciation
high-definition creative commons posters depicting The Bliss of Renunciation from the Pāḷi Jātaka stories together with further information.
The Bodhisatta, a wealthy Brahmin ascetic in the Himālayas, stayed in Benares within the royal gardens. His oldest disciple, a former king, visited and exulted, “Oh, happiness!” (sukhaṁ) ignoring the current King. The Bodhisatta explained that this bliss surpassed royal pomp, arising from renunciation and Absorption. This Dhamma lesson on the monk’s life appeased the King. The Bodhisatta was eventually reborn in the high Realm of Brahma.
