22 The Teaching of the Dog

high-definition creative commons posters depicting The Teaching of the Dog from the Pāḷi Jātaka stories together with further information.

The Bodhisatta, living as a dog, saves his kin from the great King Brahmadatta’s unjust slaughter. After the King’s carriage leather is gnawed, the Bodhisatta identifies the palace’s own thoroughbred dogs as the true culprits. He proves their guilt by inducing vomiting with buttermilk and kusa grass. Moved by this profound wisdom, the King finally embraces the Dhamma, ensuring lifelong safety, food, and righteousness for all living creatures.
