27 The Elephant and the Dog

high-definition creative commons posters depicting The Elephant and the Dog from the Pāḷi Jātaka stories together with further information.

In ancient Benares, a state elephant and a stray dog became inseparable friends, eating and playing together daily. When a villager took the dog away, the heartbroken elephant refused all food. The wise Bodhisatta, acting as the king’s minister, identified the elephant’s profound grief. Following his advice, the king proclaimed a penalty, forcing the dog’s release. The pair joyfully reunited, and the minister received great honours for his keen understanding.
