In Benares, an amorous fish is caught while following his wife. Facing death, he laments not the fire, but that his lady might think: “Aññaṁ so ratiyā gato”—he went for joy to another. The Bodhisatta, understanding animal speech, hears this. To save him from a rebirth in hell caused by passion, the wise priest secures his release from the fishermen. He warns the fish and returns him to the river.
