39 Nanda and the Buried Hoard

high-definition creative commons posters depicting Nanda and the Buried Hoard from the Pāḷi Jātaka stories together with further information.

An old householder in Benares buried treasure with his slave, Nanda, to secure his young son’s future inheritance. After the father died, the son sought the riches. However, whenever Nanda stood directly atop the buried gold, the wealth’s influence made him insolently abuse his master. Seeking counsel, the son visited the wise Bodhisatta. Following his advice, the son ousted Nanda, recovered the hoard, and lived a generously fulfilling life thereafter.
