In Benares, the Bodhisatta, serving as Lord High Treasurer, sought to provide dainty alms to a visiting Paccekabuddha. Seeking to disrupt this meritorious act, Māra created a deep, fiery pit filled with red-hot acacia-charcoal. Undeterred by the panic-stricken crowds, the Bodhisatta bravely stepped into the flames. A magnificent lotus flower miraculously rose to support his feet, enabling completion of his offering. After Māra’s dejected defeat, the Bodhisatta preached the Dhamma.
