In the days of Kassapa, a jealous monk discarded an Arahat’s alms. Reborn in hell and then as the cursed Mittavindaka, he faced endless misfortune and hunger. After visiting celestial palaces of Devadhītā and being hurled across the sea by a Yakkhini, he was nearly executed for theft. Finally, the Bodhisatta rescued him, explaining that his extreme suffering resulted from failing to heed wise advice throughout his long, arduous wanderings.
