In Benares, the Bodhisatta led five hundred ascetics in the kingdom of Kāsi. One monk adopted a poisonous viper named Veḷuka, treating it like a child. Despite the Bodhisatta’s warning that the snake would kill him, the monk refused to part with his pet. Later, after being left hungry for days, the viper bit and killed the monk. The Bodhisatta taught that those ignoring wise advice are destroyed like him.
