In Benares, townsfolk scheduled a wedding but stayed home when a spiteful ascetic falsely claimed the stars were unpropitious. Consequently, the country folk married the girl to someone else. When the townsfolk later arrived and tried to claim the bride, they were rejected. A wise man observed that while waiting on lucky stars, opportunity passes the fool by; “Attho atthassa nakkhattaṁ”—the benefit is benefit’s lucky star.
