Prince Brahmadatta, the Bodhisatta, observed his subjects performing bloody animal sacrifices to a Devatā. Determined to end this slaughter without violence, he feigned devotion to a banyan tree. Upon becoming king, he proclaimed a vow to sacrifice a thousand unrighteous citizens who broke the Five Precepts. Terrified of execution, the people immediately abandoned their wicked ways. Through this clever stratagem, the righteous king successfully established peace and saved many lives.
