The Jātakamālā, or Garland of Birth-Stories, is a classic work of Sanskrit Buddhist literature attributed to the poet Āryaśūra. It contains thirty-four stories that illustrate the Buddha’s previous incarnations as he cultivated the Ten Perfections. The stories, such as the famous account of a prince sacrificing his body to a starving tigress, serve as moral parables to inspire faith, compassion, and selflessness. The collection functions as a religious and educational tool, emphasizing the law of Karma and the boundless mercy of the Bodhisattva on his path to enlightenment. The law of Karma is the core metaphysical framework that connects the Jātaka stories, serving as the unbroken chain of cause and effect that binds all existences together and operates under the firm conviction that nothing is ever lost in the universe, which exists as one massive moral system.
