Born from a magic stone on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, a unique monkey is crowned king after finding his tribe a home behind a great waterfall. Fearing mortality after living happily for several hundred years, he sets off on a raft to seek the secret of eternal life. Eventually, he is accepted as a disciple by the Patriarch Subodhi, who names him Aware-of-Vacuity.

The episode portrays a spiritual awakening triggered by the sudden realization of mortality. Despite living in perfect independence and happiness, the Monkey King becomes deeply distressed by aging and death. This realization, showing that religion has taken hold of his heart, drives him to leap clear of reincarnation. Ultimately, his long journey across two oceans leads to a master who names him Aware-of-Vacuity (Śūnyatābodhi) to pursue enlightenment.
