Appointed to guard the Peach Garden, Monkey secretly eats the sacred peaches of immortality. Excluded from the Queen’s Peach Banquet, he tricks an Immortal, gatecrashes the feast, drinks the royal wine, and steals Lao Tzu’s powerful elixir. He flees back to earth, sharing the stolen wine with his loyal subjects. Outraged, the Jade Emperor sends a massive heavenly army, but Monkey fiercely defeats them all to protect his mountain home.

Sun Wukong’s theft of the Peaches of Immortality is interpreted as the reckless, self-serving actions of the undisciplined monkey-mind (xinyuan) seeking external solutions to spiritual problems. Rather than achieving true enlightenment through inner cultivation, the ego attempts to hoard material and celestial substances to escape death, which only binds it deeper to saṁsāric suffering.
