When Sun Wukong disrupts the heavenly Peach Banquet, the Jade Emperor sends an army of 100,000 soldiers to arrest him. After both the army and the disciple Hui-yen fail to defeat the Great Sage, Kuan-yin recommends the magician Erh-lang. The two engage in a spectacular duel of magical transformations. Finally, Lao Tzu throws his Diamond Snare from Heaven to topple Monkey, leading to his capture and impending execution.

Wukong’s battle and capture allegorically represent the Buddhist struggle to tame the monkey-mind—the restless, undisciplined human ego. His chaotic rebellion mirrors the ego running amok, which cannot be subdued by force alone. Erh-lang’s truth-piercing sight symbolizes mindfulness exposing shifting illusions, while Lao Tzu’s Diamond Snare represents the inescapable laws of Karma. Subduing and binding Wukong symbolizes the necessary discipline required to prepare the mind for true spiritual enlightenment.
