07 The Five Elements Mountain

After surviving execution and escaping Lao Tzu’s crucible, the immortal Monkey runs amok in Heaven. To stop him, Buddha wagers that Monkey cannot jump off his right palm. Boasting of his magical somersaults, Monkey leaps to five pillars, writing his name to mark the spot. Upon returning, he discovers the pillars were Buddha’s fingers. Buddha transforms his hand into the Five Elements Mountain, trapping him tightly beneath it for penance.

Buddha highlights that true wisdom takes aeons to achieve, whereas Monkey relies on superficial magic and pride. Monkey’s struggle to escape Buddha’s palm represents the futility of trying to outrun supreme, all-encompassing wisdom. His confinement under the Five Elements Mountain serves as a necessary “penance” to ground his recklessness. Ultimately, Buddha’s mercy in sealing the mountain and appointing a guardian points to eventual rescue once his penance is fulfilled.
