Buddha tasks the Bodhisattva Kuan-yin with finding a pilgrim in China to fetch scriptures from India. Accompanied by her disciple Hui-yen, she journeys eastwards. Along the way, she recruits and redeems various reformed sinners to serve as the pilgrim’s guardians: Sandy Priest, the pig spirit Pigsy, a condemned dragon prince, and the imprisoned Monkey. They finally arrive in Chang’an, disguised as two shabby, ordinary priests to locate the scripture seeker.
This episode highlights the transformative power of compassion (karuṇā) and the path of repentance. Each fallen creature represents different spiritual delusions and karmic obstacles. By taking vows under the Bodhisattva Kuan-yin, their destructive actions are redirected toward a sacred quest for the True Scriptures (Dharma). This shows that enlightenment is attainable for all suffering beings, regardless of past sins.
