After dying suddenly, the Emperor of Tang enters the underworld. There, assistant judge Ts’ui Chio alters the Register of Death, granting him twenty more years of life. After pacifying hungry ghosts with borrowed celestial money, the Emperor returns to the living world and wakes in his coffin. He repays his debt and sends a volunteer, Liu, to deliver melons to the Judges, who resurrect Liu and his wife.
This episode highlights the transition to a new existence through the Wheel of Incarnation. The suffering of deceased souls, trapped as pretas or hungry ghosts cut off from salvation, can be alleviated through earthly alms and celebrating the Great Mass, which emphasizes the profound connection between the realms, showing that a ruler must appease the spirits in the underworld to govern the living in peace.
