After Blue Lotus is resurrected in a deceased princess’s body to reunite with her husband, Emperor T’ai Tsung builds the grand Hsiang Kuo Temple to repay an underworld debt. During a Great Mass for the Dead, the Bodhisattva Kuan-yin interrupts priest Xuan Zang to reveal the superior Big Vehicle scriptures in India. Swearing to retrieve them, Xuan Zang is renamed Tripitaka and sets off on his perilous journey.

This episode illustrates the limits of the Hīnayāna scriptures, which cannot save the souls of the dead. True liberation requires the Mahāyāna teachings to deliver believers from the endless cycle of incarnation. It also highlights how pious acts and constant alms accumulate immense spiritual wealth, demonstrating that karmic retribution and reincarnation govern all earthly life.
