The priest Tripitaka leaves Ch’ang-an for India to retrieve Buddhist scriptures. Trapped by animal-spirits at Two Forked Ridge, his followers are devoured, but the Planet Venus spirit rescues him. Later, a brave hunter saves him from several wild beasts and hosts him. After Tripitaka’s pious prayers successfully liberate the hunter’s deceased father’s soul, the hunter escorts him to the T’ang frontier, where a loud, mysterious voice suddenly hails his arrival.

The terrifying external perils and demons Tripitaka encounters are ultimately conquered by the mind, as his heart alone can destroy them. His miraculous survival demonstrates that a pure inner nature protects a seeker from being consumed by worldly evils. Furthermore, his recitation of sacred scriptures successfully wipes away evil karma, showing how spiritual devotion can liberate suffering souls and facilitate a favorable rebirth.
