Tripitaka frees the magic Monkey, who was imprisoned under a mountain for five hundred years. Monkey gladly becomes his disciple but quickly deserts after Tripitaka scolds him for killing six violent bandits. To help control him, the Bodhisattva Kuan-yin gives Tripitaka a magic cap and a restraining spell. When Monkey returns, the painful Tight Fillet spell forces his submission, securing his faithful protection on the perilous journey to India ahead.

The six bandits Monkey slays represent the six senses—eye, ear, nose, tongue, mind, and body—which foster lust, anger, and suffering. Merely destroying these external distractions is insufficient; the mind must be actively tamed. The restrictive Tight Fillet represents the rigorous spiritual discipline needed to conquer one’s own unruly nature and attain the Fruits of Illumination.
