After a fierce night of battling Mr Kao’s monstrous son-in-law, Monkey discovers that the pig-like beast, Pigsy, is actually a fallen heavenly commander. Upon learning Monkey is escorting the pilgrim Tripitaka to India to fetch scriptures, Pigsy immediately surrenders. He explains he was previously converted by Bodhisattva Kuan-yin to assist their holy quest. Pigsy burns his cave, submits to Tripitaka, and then joins the group travelling westward as a disciple.

This episode as a purification of karma and earthly desire. Pigsy’s monstrous form reflects his previous heavenly downfall, but his surrender represents spiritual repentance and vow-taking. By burning his cave, renouncing his wife, rejecting worldly gold, and carrying the group’s luggage, he embraces non-attachment through fasting and abstention to achieve ultimate illumination and salvation.
