Monkey travels to Heaven and obtains a Life Restoring Elixir from Lao Tzu to successfully revive the drowned King of Crow-cock. Disguising the resurrected king as a servant, they enter the capital city to expose the wizard impostor currently occupying the throne. After the fleeing demon attempts to trick them by transforming into Tripitaka, Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī intervenes, revealing the monster is actually his blue-maned lion, whom he then rides away.

This episode centres on karma and the inescapable law of cause and effect. The King of Crow-cock’s three-year suffering in the well was direct retaliation for binding and casting Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī into a river for three days. It illustrates the truth that everything that happens depends on karma, showing that even powerful, well-meaning rulers must reap the exact fruits of their past offenses.
