To rescue their master, Tripitaka, from an underwater monster, the disciples Monkey, Pigsy, and Sandy battle the creature but fail to defeat it. Monkey seeks help from the Bodhisattva Kuan-yin, who captures the monster (revealed as her escaped goldfish) using a magic basket. Freed from a stone chest, Tripitaka is carried across the river by a grateful giant white turtle, promising to ask the Buddha about the turtle’s ultimate future.

This episode is an allegory for karmic progression and the preciousness of human rebirth. Even animals can advance spiritually: Kuan-yin’s goldfish acquires magical powers simply by listening to daily scriptures. Meanwhile, the giant white turtle practices austerities for a thousand years to achieve human speech, yet still seeks human form. This highlights that a human vessel is uniquely vital for achieving ultimate enlightenment.
