To complete eighty-one calamities, Kuan-yin orders the pilgrims to be dropped back to earth. While they cross a river on a large white turtle, the priest admits he forgot to ask Buddha about the turtle’s future. The angry creature dumps them in the water, wetting their scriptures. After Monkey defends the scrolls from invisible night demons, they dry them, visit a local farm, and then secretly resume their flight East.

This final calamity represents the necessity of complete spiritual trial, as nine times nine is the crucial number for ultimate fulfillment. Tripitaka forgetting the turtle’s query highlights karmic debt—even enlightened beings face consequences for unfulfilled commitments. Finally, the torn scripture teaches that ultimate truth is ineffable; the lost text contained a secret refinement of doctrine not meant for written transmission.
