Returning to China, the pilgrim Tripitaka and his disciples deliver five thousand and forty-eight scriptures to the Emperor. Welcomed with a grand banquet, they are soon whisked back to Paradise. There, Buddha rewards their devotion: Tripitaka and Monkey achieve Buddhahood, Pigsy is made Cleanser of the Altar, Sandy becomes an Arhat, and their horse transforms into a Heavenly Dragon. Finally, Monkey’s golden headband vanishes as the celestial assembly sings praises.

This episode is an allegory of the mind’s journey to enlightenment. Each pilgrim represents a different mental barrier or human desire. Monkey represents the restless monkey-mind, who, once subdued and enlightened, no longer requires the golden headband of external restraint. Their various celestial ranks show how karma transforms defilements into awakening, demonstrating that all beings possess the potential for ultimate liberation in the Pure Land.
