The Great War begins with the venerable Bhishma leading the Kaurava army. For ten days, he remains invincible, devastating the Pandava ranks while refusing to kill the Pandavas themselves. Realizing they cannot win while he stands, the Pandavas use Shikhandi as a shield, knowing Bhishma will not fight a woman. Arjuna then pierces Bhishma with a forest of arrows, causing the patriarch to fall upon a bed of shafts.
